some info from Future Systems

Architects Future Systems have been commissioned to design a new concert and congress centre at ?eské Bud?jovice in the Czech Republic.

Here’s some info from Future Systems:

Just out side of Prague in the town of Ceske Budejovice a new Concert and Congress Centre has been designed by the Future Systems team headed by Jan Kaplicky. The new centre is named after one of the Czech Republic’s most famous composers Antonin Dvorak, and is to be built on an old military site, showing the Czech commitment to a cultural agenda.

The two concert halls, seating a 1000 people in the philharmonic music hall and 400 in the chamber music hall, are of a completely new breed in architecture. For the first time in musical design a large and elegant rear window behind the musicians will be carved out to allow for spectacular views in to the park behind the building. Each hall is formed of sensual free form curves that manage to combine aesthetic beauty with outstanding acoustic quality that is only enhanced by the ‘eye’ window concept.

The unique design will be the centrepiece for a new development and will encompass both cultural and commercial spaces. The cultural space and grand entrance is a wonderfully light and open space constituted from restaurant areas, café lounges, dancing floors and the music halls.

As the home of the Ceske Budejovice philharmonic orchestra the design will achieve an exquisite blend between and culture and music with the utmost sensitivity and understanding of every user and does so while maintaining a thrilling narrative, as is true of all one off Future Systems projects.

The Future of Green Architecture A Floating Museum

Physalia A museum, nightclub and filtration system, Physalia uses its hull and rooftop plants to scrub away pollution.

Physalia is half-boat, half-building, and all green. This mammoth aluminum concept by Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut is meant to travel Europe’s rivers, making filthy water drinkable. At the same time, the ship generates more energy than it uses.

A coat of titanium dioxide paint brushed onto the silvery shell will neutralize pollution by absorbing ultraviolet rays, enabling a chemical reaction that decomposes organic and inorganic toxins. (It’s the same technology used in certain high-tech concrete that breaks down airborne particulates.) As the vessel whips along, purifying waterways, it can draw on both solar and hydro power. Turbines under the hull transform water movement into electricity, and rooftop photovoltaic cells harness energy from the sun. The roof doubles as a nursery, whose carefully selected plants help filter river gunk, whether from the Thames, Rhine or Euphrates.

But Physalia isn’t just designed to be a working ship. The vessel will also be a floating museum of sorts. Scientists who study aquatic ecosystems can hole up in the dedicated “Earth garden” lab, and tourists can visit temporary exhibits in a “water garden” or settle into a submerged lounge that could easily pass for a London nightclub. Callebaut, 33, dreamed up the idea after last year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen shone a long-overdue spotlight on global water issues. He has some lofty terms for his project: It’s a “nomadic hydrodynamic laboratory,” a “fragment of living earth,” and a “floating agora” on a “geopolitical scale.” Others might just call it a cool idea.

Modern Architecture Winding Spine Mall

There certainly isn't a shortage of shapes and sizes in this shopping mall designed by Ron Arad Architects. Located near Santiago Calatrava's high speed rail station in Liège, Belgium, "Médiacité" has a 1150 foot (350 meter) long winding spine that connects two mall buildings together.

Constructed from a complex network of steel roof ribs that undulate and arch over the mall’s main pathway, the mall’s spine gets natural sunlight through a translucent material. At the end of the building, the roof curves down and transforms into the facade of the building, which also serves as a rain screen.

The Taipei Performing Arts Center consists of three theatres which are connected each other with a concourse to offers a hybrid experience. The architect described the concourse as a bridging element which acts as circulation for the theaters but also as a commercial zone which includes lively urban activities such as shopping, restaurants, bars, and other public amenities.

Restaurants, bars, cafes, and forms of entertainment will be complimented by cultural activities such as art galleries, bookstores, and the theater library. Modern Architecture - Great Blue Whale South Korea

I'm kind of bummed that Studio Nicoletti Associati's Great Blue Whale placed third in an international competition to design the Thematic Pavilion at the 2012 Yeosu Expo in South Korea. The magnificent structure emerges from Yeosu’s waters as a great blue whale hurling itself out of the port to represent the Expo's theme: The Living Ocean and Coast.

Studio Nicoletti's Thematic Pavilion attempts to draw attention to the fundamental influence of the planet's oceans and coasts resources, and how dangerous it is for us to ignore them. While the architects felt the iconic and symbolic design holds the message that Yeosu Expo 2012 wants to transmit to the world, it was concluded by the jury that, "its shape is by now quite familiar, with many precedents around the world."

On a positive note, they added: "It has a strong and powerful form that would become instantly recognizable. The theme of the Expo is symbolically represented with a shape drawn from marine life. The image of the pavilion is consistent with the theme of the ocean. Its fluid shape celebrates the nature of water and the marine life that has adapted to it. It makes a very simple but powerful metaphorical relationship. The exhibition space is very practical for post-use."

Modern Architecture Awakening the Analog Era

According to designboom, a proposal for the new museum of design and performance in San Francisco has been made by an American architecture studio, mark dziewulski. They stylized the museum with a few large scale curvatures. Take a look.
One of the most remarkable thing to focus on is what inspired such a shape into the architects. The picture below clearly shows that the source of the inspiration was relics of the analog age such as film and newspaper. It is ironic that probably the most futuristic building that will be built around 2010 is re-interpreting the legacy from 1950s.
Anyway, a new building inspired by old days inspires us again living in such a cutting-edge era.

Museum Stuttgart, Germany

Who knew museums could look this good? Porsche has announced that its new Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany is nearing completion, with the first 12 exhibition vehicles installed. Within the next few days, 80 exhibits will have been relocated to the museum from off-premises storage. “In the last few weeks, we have comprehensively restored all the vehicles and polished them up for their use in the museum,” said Klaus Bischof, head of Porsche’s “Rolling Museum”.

The first exhibits to go on display include a 356 Cabriolet, an original “11? model, and the first prototype of the 924. Since virtually all museum vehicles are also used on the road, and are continuously being replaced by other vehicles, the exhibition will constantly be changing, allowing visitors to discover different rare Porsche vehicles in the museum on a regular basis.

Modern Architecture – The Ecorium Project

The National Ecological Institute of South Korea recently released plans for a large-scale nature reserve. Designed by architectural firm SAMOO, the “Ecorium Project” will be a striking environmental center spread out over a 33,000 square meter area of natural environment.

Featuring eco domes, greenhouses, a water reserve, and an education center, the Ecorium Project will serve to educate people about the world’s natural eco-systems, and how to best protect them.

“The National Ecological Institute, South Korea is intended to do comprehensive study of the converging eco-systems of nature, human and climate to ensure safety, stability and the harmonious coexistence of competing agendas,” said a spokesperson for Samoo. “The NEI will play a important role as a think tank for research and policy making.”
